How to Check Battery Status and Health Online

MyDeviceScan · Updated June 2026 · 6 min read

Battery problems can show up as fast drain, unexpected shutdowns, slow charging, or a laptop that only works while plugged in. An online battery test can quickly show current charge level, charging status, and estimated time remaining, but it is important to understand what those numbers do and do not prove.

What an Online Battery Test Can Show

The MyDeviceScan Battery Test uses the browser Battery Status API where supported. It can display the current battery percentage, whether the device is charging, and an estimated time to full charge or discharge. This is useful when you want to confirm that the browser can detect charging state or compare how quickly the percentage drops during normal use.

Support varies by browser and device. Some platforms, especially iPhone and iPad browsers, restrict battery access for privacy reasons. If the test is not supported, use the operating system battery settings instead.

Battery Status vs Battery Health

Battery status is what is happening right now: 67% charge, plugged in, or 2 hours estimated remaining. Battery health is the long-term condition of the battery compared with when it was new. A battery can show 100% charge but still have poor health if it only holds 65% of its original capacity.

How to Interpret Fast Battery Drain

Fast drain is not always a bad battery. High screen brightness, video calls, browser tabs, games, background sync, weak cellular signal, and external devices can all consume power quickly. Test once while idle and once during normal work. If the battery drops quickly even while idle, health or background processes are more suspicious.

On laptops, also compare battery mode and plugged-in mode. Some devices run faster and hotter when plugged in, while others throttle heavily on battery to save power. That difference affects both battery life and performance tests.

When Replacement Makes Sense

If battery health falls below about 80%, many users start noticing shorter runtime. Below 70%, shutdowns under load become more common, especially in older phones and laptops. Replacement is worth considering when battery life affects daily use, the device shuts down early, or the battery physically swells. For a quick first check, run the Battery Test, then confirm long-term health in your operating system's battery report.
