Motion Sensor Test

Open this page on your phone to check accelerometer, gyroscope, tilt, and device orientation readings. Move and rotate the phone slowly to see live values update.

How to Test Phone Motion Sensors

Tap Start Sensor Scan, allow motion access if your browser asks, then slowly tilt the phone forward, backward, left, and right. The preview should move smoothly and the alpha, beta, gamma, and acceleration values should update as the device moves.

For a used phone check, rotate the device in all directions and watch for frozen values, sudden jumps, or sensors that never start. Some browsers block sensor access unless the page is opened through HTTPS and triggered by a user gesture.

What the Values Mean

Alpha usually represents compass-style rotation around the vertical axis. Beta and gamma represent front/back and left/right tilt. Acceleration values show movement along the device axes and may include gravity depending on browser support.

This is a browser-based diagnostic, not a repair tool. Cases with magnets, privacy settings, low power mode, browser permissions, and operating system restrictions can affect readings.

FAQ

Motion Sensor Test — Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I see no sensor data?

Desktops and most laptops have no motion sensors, so nothing will appear. On a phone or tablet it should work — but on iPhone you must tap to start and grant motion permission. The sensor API also only works over HTTPS.

What's the difference between the accelerometer and gyroscope?

The accelerometer measures linear acceleration and gravity, which tells you the device's tilt and movement. The gyroscope measures the rate of rotation. Together they let your phone track full 3D motion and orientation.

Why does my phone ask for permission?

On iOS 13 and later, Safari requires explicit permission before a website can read motion and orientation sensors, for privacy. Tap Allow when prompted; if you denied it, re-enable it under Settings → Safari → Motion & Orientation Access.

What can I use this test for?

Use it to confirm the sensors still work after a drop or repair, to diagnose screen auto-rotation problems, or to verify a used phone's gyroscope and accelerometer before buying it.
